Part of the guide: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Norfolk: the complete guide
Many women think about trying martial arts and never do. The usual reasons are nerves, not being fit enough or not knowing what happens in a class. This guide answers those worries. It is honest about what we can say and what we do not know about you.
Is martial arts for women?
Yes. Martial arts are for anyone who wants to train. All levels are welcome at Union Thai.
You do not need to be fit. You do not need experience. You do not need to want to fight. Some people come for fitness, some for confidence, some for the fun of learning a new skill.
What if I am nervous about my first class?
Nerves are normal. Almost everyone feels them before a first class, whatever their size or age.
Tell the coach it is your first time. They will look after you. You will start with the basics and go at your own pace. You are not being tested.
Will I have to spar?
No. Sparring is optional and it never happens in your first session.
Beginners start with technique and pad work. Contact is built up slowly. You decide when, and if, you want to spar.
What will I learn?
It depends on the class. In Muay Thai you learn striking with fists, elbows, knees and shins. In BJJ you learn grappling on the ground. In MMA you learn a bit of both, plus wrestling.
All of them build fitness, balance and confidence. You can read more in our complete Muay Thai guide, our complete MMA guide and our complete BJJ guide.
What should I wear?
Wear shorts or leggings and a fitted t-shirt. Bring water. For Muay Thai you train barefoot.
We can lend gloves for your first session. Please do not buy kit before you have tried a class. If you have a question about what to wear, ask us.
What is the community like?
Union Thai is a community gym. People train together week after week and push each other on.
We cannot promise what suits every person. The best way to find out is to come and see. Use pay as you go for a single session with no commitment.
Can I ask something before I come?
Yes. Use the contact page to ask anything. If you would feel more comfortable with a 1-to-1 session first, see the 1-to-1 section of the coaches page.
There is no wrong question. We would rather you asked.
What are the common worries and what is the honest answer?
The common worries are being too unfit, being the only beginner and getting hurt. The honest answers are as follows.
- Too unfit. You do not need to be fit. You get fit by training.
- The only beginner. Everyone in the room started as a beginner.
- Getting hurt. Contact is built up slowly. Sparring is optional.
If you have another worry, ask us. We would rather talk it through than have you stay away.
Why do people keep coming back?
It is fun. It is a good workout. You are learning a skill. There is a community around you.
People often say they feel stronger and calmer after a session. Everyone is different, so try it and see how it feels for you.
How do I start?
Pick a class on the timetable. See the memberships page for the options. Pay as you go is a good first step.
Turn up a few minutes early, say hello and tell the coach it is your first time.
